Making Fourths

This afternoon students learned about fractions. Students divided a geoboard in 4 equal parts (fourths). 

During this activity students:
  • found the area of a variety of shapes
  • realized that shapes with the same area may not look alike
  • learned that fourths of the same whole must have the same area
  • discovered that shapes that represent the same fractional part do not have to be congruent (they assumed shapes had to be congruent)

Note that the shapes in the geoboards are not congruent but each fourth has the same area (4 square units)
