Efficient Problem Solving Using Organized Lists

Students were given the problem below yesterday.

Many students acted out the problem as a way of understanding what it was asking them to solve.

Students presented a variety of answers on our Bansho wall. Students were asked which solutions communicated the answers the best (which ones were clear and easy to understand all of the different scores you can get on the target using 2 darts).

We zoomed in on one solution where a student used an organized list to solve the problem. We discussed why this was an efficient approach to the problem since it was easy to see all of the possible scores (and also easy to see if there are any scores missing).

Today students were given a similar problem to solve.

Students applied the strategy of the organized list to solve the problem with 3 darts.
