Sphero Obstacle Course Time Challenge

Today students participated in a Sphero challenge in the gym. The goal was to navigate Sphero through the course as quick as possible without incurring any time penalties (1s for each infraction). Time penalties included missing mandatory obstacles (for example, Sphero must zig zag through the cones) or going off the course. Many students quickly connected this activity to the Tortoise and the Hare Fable (one of the Fables we read in our Guided Reading groups).

Before we started, we also discussed how we could support each other during this task and what we could do if we got frustrated with an obstacle (Learning Skills: Collaboration and Self-Regulation).

First, students walked through the course and each obstacle was explained and demonstrated.

Then students used an iPad to navigate the obstacles. Another student was in charge of timing the run with a stop watch. To finish the course, students needed Sphero to break though a foam wall (it was usually accompanied by a large cheer from the crowd).

Afterwards, we found the total time for each trial (time plus penalty time) and then converted the total time into seconds (students used mental addition strategies they learned from our Number Talks). Students found it interesting that we had 3 runs finish within 2s of each other. We also took time in our Community Circle to listen to and give appreciations to one another.
