Repeating Patterns- Determining the 20th and 89th Block

Students have been making repeating patterns with pattern blocks. The goal in this activity was for students to figure out what the 20th and 89th block were in their pattern.

First students experimented in making different patterns:

Then students made their repeating pattern and repeated it until they used 12 pattern blocks. Next students predicted what the 20th block would be in their pattern (without actually making it with pattern blocks). 

Finally, students transferred their pattern onto a 100s chart. Students used a 100s chart to determine what the 20th and 89th block would be in their pattern.
