Today we watched a live webcast by Author Kevin Henkes. We have read and discussed three of his books so far this year. Kevin Henkes talked about living his life as a writer and how he came up with some of the ideas for his books (which I was very anxious for my students to hear).

Before the webcast we brainstormed what we knew about Kevin Henkes:
  • He writes picture books.
  • His books contains real life type problems.
  • He has written a lot of books.
  • His stories usual start of with the main character happy but then they encounter some sort of problem where they become very upset.
  • His books have happy endings.
  • There is usually a lesson to be learned from reading his books.
We brainstormed questions we wanted to Kevin Henkes to answer:
  • What is your favourite story you have written?
  • What is your longest story?
  • How do you get your ideas?
  • Who is your favourite character?
  • How do you get your books published?
  • Do you know the ending of a book when you begin to write it?
These are some of the things students learned from watching the webcast:
  • I learned that he also writes chapter books.
  • I learned that he is 52 years old.
  • I learned that he is very nice.
  • I learned that he wrote 47 books.
  • I learned that he got his idea for Lilly's Plastic Purple Purse by seeing a girl in an airport with a purse that played music.
  • I learned that he pronounces his name Kevin Henk-i-s.
  • I learned that Kevin Henkes loves to write book.
  • I learned that he published his first book when he was 19 years old.
  • I learned that Kevin Henkes likes to do art.
  • I learned that he writes his books on a typewriter.
