Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type

Today we read one of my favourite books:

The story is about a group of cows and Farmer Brown. The cows ask Farmer Brown (via a typed note) for electric blankets. When Farmer Brown refuses, the cows go on strike.

The purpose of this lesson was to continue using the q-chart (question chart) to ask and answer deep thinking questions before, during and after the story.

Our big thinking question for this story was: Do you think it was a good idea for Farmer Brown to accept the cows' deal? Some students agreed with Farmer Brown since they assumed that milk and egg production would resume. Others disagreed in hindsight since Farmer Brown never received the typewriter that was promised in the deal (the duck made off with it) and thought other animals would start making demands.
Other questions that were discussed:
  • Are electric blankets a want or a need?
  • Farmer Brown could not believe his ears and his eyes. Why not?
  • What is the setting of the story?
  • When will Farmer Brown be happy?
  • What does the word ultimatum mean? What does the word impatient mean?
  • What does Duck is a neutral party mean?
