Students Made Their Own Measuring Tool

Grade 1 and 2 students have been learning to measure with non-standard units (such as cubes, tiles, rods etc). Today they made their own tool that measures in cubes. This is especially a nice activity for the grade 2s as they will soon be measuring in standard units (such as centimetres).

A space is left at the beginning since the 0 point on ruler is usually not at the edge. We also noted that there cannot be any spaces between the squares and adding a number line allows us to measure quickly and accurately.
