Students were given Tangrams shapes to sort using one and two attributes (for example size and shape). Afterwards they were given the following problem: Use 3 sets of Tangrams (21 shapes) to make different rectangles. All of the rectangles were the same size and shape and students could choose what Tangrams to use from their sets. Below are a number of different solutions to the problem. Then students were asked to record what shapes they used in making the rectangles. We collected the data and made a bar graph together. We found that the most popular shapes in the rectangles were large and small triangles and the least popular was the parallelogram. We discussed why these results occurred.
