Shared Reading: Morning Message

Every morning, as part of our balanced literacy program, we do a shared reading in the form of a morning message. I usually focus on phonic rules during this time as well as sight words and fluency. Below is an example of a morning message. We went over a long vowel rule, then students labeled long vowel sounds in the morning message. When reading the message, I modelled how to use other decoding strategies such as breaking up a word into sound chunks (chunky monkey strategy). After we finished working with the message, we read it together as a class then I picked a couple of students to read it by themselves to the class.
