Measuring in Metres

Students have been learning to measure in metres (standard units). This is a Grade 2 expectation but the Grade 1's have been learning about metres as well.

In this picture, students made a metre stick out of cubes. They estimated how many cubes it would take to make a metre stick before measuring a meter stick with cubes.

Students were given either a metre stick or metre string. Their goal was to find objects of various lengths (for example between 1 and 2 metres long). Students estimated distances with giant steps before measuring the distance in metres . Students discovered that finding objects for the shorter distances were easier than the longer distances. For example there were lots of items in the class between 1 and 2 metres long but few items between 5 and 7 metres long. We also discussed that the length of a school bus is about 10 metres long.
