Finding Perimeter of Pattern Block Shapes

Students investigated the different perimeters of shapes that can be made using one set of six pattern blocks.

  • determined the perimeters of various shapes
  • built a variety of configurations using the same six shapes
  • generalized about geometric shapes and their perimeters
Students discovered that the same perimeters can be obtained using different sets of blocks (see graphing the perimeter of our shapes below). They also noticed that the more sides the shapes share, the smaller the perimeter would be and the more they stretched out their shapes, the greater the perimeter would be.
