#### Green Screening

 Students learned how to use the green screen at school this week. Students made 3D buildings out of connexion shapes and inserted their building, using the iPad Green Screen app, into a city landscape.

#### Healthy Relationships Unit-Health Cirriculum

 Today I taught the 2nd lesson of our Healthy Relationships Unit. The first lesson, students brainstormed people they have relationships with (e.g. parents, siblings, friends, teachers, coaches). We also discussed signs of healthy relationships (caring, communication skills, respect) and relationship challenges (mean words, hitting, not including, bullying).In our 2nd lesson, we discussed respecting visible (skin colour, clothing, body size and shape) and invisible differences (allergies, personal preferences and we also discussed gender identity and sexual orientation as per the lesson below). We had a terrific discussion in class and students contributed many insightful ideas. click to enlarge:

#### Treasure Hunt! Math Breakout Adventure Game

 Today students played a math adventure game called Treasure Hunt. Treasure Hunt is a PC point and click game I made where players must solve a series of math puzzles in order to proceed to the next level.In the first challenge, students needed to solve a series of equations that were written on a wall. If they solved the equations correctly, they were given a key to open the first door in the game. Students had the choice to solve any (or all) of the equations.In the next challenge, students needed to use the information on the right hand side of the wall to figure out the proper order to press the symbols on the grid.In the final challenge, students uncovered, using a bit of gamer's intuition, a mysterious QR code on a wall in the game. Students then used an iPad to scan the QR code that launched a website. This was a challenging problem and students diligently worked together to figure it out (you can find the solution here).Once student's figured out the answer, they punched in the number code to obtain the last key to unlock the final door.The final screen brought lots of celebrations from the students!

#### Take a Part Day with our Reading Buddies

 Last week we helped our Kindergarten buddies with Take Apart Day! Students helped their buddies take apart computers, DVD players, game controllers and other devices. Grade 3s continue to demonstrate lots of leadership and responsibility with their buddies!

#### Gathering Research about Koalas using Key Words and Minds Maps

 Today students researched information about koalas and then displayed their information on a mind map.First students were introduced to the mind mapping strategy. Mind maps are a visual method to display, categorize and connect key ideas and information. Together we looked through a variety of mind map samples and discussed the characteristics of a mind map.Sample mind map:A mind map explaining how to create a mind map!Next we read an article about koalas from a magazine. Students picked out key ideas from each paragraph and represented each idea with one or two key words.Our key word list (ask your child what idea is represented by the key words below):Then we started creating a mind map together. We discussed what categories we would use in our mind map (appearance, life cycle, habitat, diet, behaviour) and debated what ideas would fit under each category.Finally students made their own mind maps about koalas. Students engaged in terrific discussions debating where different ideas belonged on the mind map.Sample mind maps being completed by students:I love how this student corrected represented their ideas using images. #### Hammerhead Sharks- Researching Using Key Words & Paraphrasing

 Yesterday we made a class book. First we read information about hammerhead sharks and students identified the key facts. Then students narrowed down that key fact to one key word. Next students paraphrased their idea out loud. Finally, students created a page for our class book containing their paraphrased fact and a text feature about their fact.Students paraphrasing their key fact:
